3 Good Reasons To Attend Childbirth Education Classes

Blog

Having a baby can be an incredible, exciting endeavor. But the process of childbirth itself can be complex and quite unfamiliar for first-time mothers. It's a good idea to learn as much as you can about childbirth before you actually go into labor. You can read books, talk to your OBGYN, and also attend childbirth classes, which are typically taught by an OBGYN or their staff. This last suggestion — attending childbirth classes — is actually one of the best ways to prepare for childbirth. Here are some key reasons why.

You'll get an opportunity to ask questions and learn from others' questions.

Chances are you have plenty of questions about childbirth. You may not know who to ask those questions. Finding trusted sources is tough these days! An OBGYN or a member of their staff who is teaching childbirth classes is certainly a good, qualified resource. They generally allow plenty of time for questions during and after class, so you can ask everything on your mind and have confidence in the answers. Plus, you can listen as other class members ask questions and receive answers. Once you hear them, you may realize you had some of the same questions and didn't realize it.

You'll be calmer and less anxious when you do go into labor.

When you do go into labor, knowing what to expect — because you were taught this in your classes — will help keep you from feeling too stressed-out, worried, or anxious about the experience. And when you're calmer, you are less likely to have a traumatic delivery. If your body is relaxed because you're confident, you may be less apt to experience tearing. You'll certainly have better memories of the birth, too, if you're not anxious and on-edge the whole time.

You'll be better equipped to make decisions about your labor and delivery.

Do you want to give birth in the hospital or at a birthing center? Do you want pain relievers, or would you prefer a natural birth? These and other questions about your birthing preferences are not always easy to answer if you don't know a lot about labor and childbirth. During childbirth classes, you'll usually learn about these options so you can make more informed decisions for yourself and your baby.

If your OBGYN offers childbirth classes or recommends specific ones, consider attending. This is a great way to learn what to expect and prepare for the arrival of your little one. Contact a medical facility like Cathy J. Berry M.D. & Associates to learn more.

Early Menopause: What Do You Need to Know?

Menopause took me by surprise. I thought only women in their 50s and 60s went through it, but I was in my late 30s when I entered this stage in my life. After talking to my OB/GYN, I discovered that my mother's early menopause played a major role in why I started so early. It was challenging to unexpectedly find myself dealing with the emotional and physical aspects of menopause. I soon discovered that I was not alone. There are many other women who started menopause at an early age and they were just as nervous as I was. I started this blog to give voice to those women and to provide emotional support.
